DIY Cold Plunge Chiller: Building the Loop Yourself

What a DIY cold plunge chiller loop involves, which parts to build and which to buy, and the mistakes that make a homemade system underperform.

Most DIY chiller projects should buy the chiller and build the loop around it. The chiller is a sealed refrigeration circuit that cannot be improvised safely; the pump, filter, hoses, manifold and insulation can be assembled at home with ordinary tools.

A cold plunge chiller is two things at once: a refrigeration circuit and a water loop. The refrigeration part is a sealed system with refrigerant, pressure and electrical risk. The water loop is plumbing. Most successful DIY projects buy the first and build the second.

What you can build and what you should buy

Build or buy, part by part
PartBuild it?Why
Compressor and refrigerant circuitNoSealed system, needs certification and tools
Evaporator and condenserNoPart of the sealed circuit
Chiller as a unitNoBuy a rated unit with a warranty
Tub and bulkheadsYesOrdinary plumbing with care
Pump and manifoldYesStandard parts, sized to flow
Filter housingYesOff-the-shelf housings and cartridges
Hoses and insulationYesEasy to improve on stock parts
Controller and set pointPartlyUse the chiller's own controller

If a project plan starts with "recover a compressor from a fridge", it is a refrigeration project, not a plunge project, and it needs an HVAC technician.

What the loop has to do

Three jobs, in order:

  1. Move water from the tub through the filter and the chiller and back.
  2. Filter the water so debris does not foul the heat exchanger.
  3. Return the water without air locks, leaks or noise.

Every design decision is downstream of those three.

Sizing the pump for the loop

The pump must deliver the chiller's required flow at the actual head of your system.

  • Measure the vertical lift from the tub water level to the highest point in the loop.
  • Count the fittings and the hose length; each adds resistance.
  • Account for the filter, especially as it loads.
  • Check the pump curve at the duty point, not the free-flow rating.

A pump rated at 3,000 litres per hour at zero head may deliver far less through a filter and three metres of hose. If the chiller needs 1,500 litres per hour, that margin disappears quickly.

Plumbing layout that works

A layout that is easy to service and hard to get wrong:

  1. Tub low port → pump inlet (with a strainer before the pump).
  2. Pump outlet → filter housing.
  3. Filter outlet → chiller inlet.
  4. Chiller outlet → tub high port.
  5. Isolation valves either side of the pump, filter and chiller.
  6. A drain valve at the lowest point.

Keep hoses short, and support them so the weight does not hang on the bulkheads.

Where DIY loops leak

  • Bulkhead fittings installed without a proper gasket or with the wrong hole size.
  • Hose barbs with one clamp instead of two, or a clamp over a split hose.
  • Threaded fittings sealed with the wrong tape, or over-tightened.
  • Bypass and drain valves left half-closed after servicing.
  • Filter housings that are not rated for the pressure the pump produces.

A leak test with cold water, for 24 hours, before any electrical component runs, catches nearly all of them.

Insulation and condensation

A DIY loop cools water below room temperature, so it will sweat.

  • Insulate both hoses, not just the return.
  • Keep cold surfaces away from wood, drywall and electrics.
  • Put a drip tray under the chiller and the filter.
  • Ventilate the space; a cold loop in a humid room is a condensation machine.

Electrical safety

  • Use a GFCI or RCD protected circuit.
  • Keep the pump and chiller on a dry, raised surface.
  • Route cables above the water line and away from the floor.
  • Do not use extension leads across wet ground.
  • Have an electrician check the final arrangement if you are unsure.

When the build is worth it

Build when you already own a chiller or a suitable tub, when your space is unusual, or when you want a loop tuned to a specific layout. Buy a matched tub-and-chiller system when you want the ports, pump and filter chosen by someone else, with one warranty covering the whole thing.

The middle path is the most common: buy the chiller and pump, build the tub, the plumbing and the insulation.

Testing the loop before you trust it

Test in stages, and stop at the first failure.

  1. Dry fit. Assemble everything without water and check that hoses reach without strain.
  2. Fill and leak test. Fill with plain cold water and watch every joint for 24 hours.
  3. Flow test. Run the pump only, with the chiller off, and confirm a steady return.
  4. Filter test. Add the cartridge and confirm flow does not collapse.
  5. Chiller test. Run the chiller and measure how fast the water drops 5°C.
  6. Hold test. Leave it overnight and check the temperature in the morning.

The overnight test is the one that tells you whether the loop and the insulation are doing their job together.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build my own chiller from a fridge compressor?

It is technically possible and practically a refrigeration job: refrigerant handling, brazing, vacuum and charging, plus electrical work. It is not a beginner plumbing project, and it usually costs more than buying a rated unit.

What size pump do I need for a DIY chiller loop?

Match the pump to the chiller's required flow at your actual head, including the filter and hose resistance. Measure the lift, count the fittings, and check the pump curve.

How do I stop a DIY loop from leaking?

Use correct bulkhead fittings with gaskets, double-clamp hoses, tape threaded joints properly, and leak-test for 24 hours before running any electrics.

Do I need a filter in a DIY cold plunge?

Yes. Without one, debris reaches the evaporator, flow drops, and the chiller loses performance. A simple inline housing with a washable or replaceable cartridge is enough.

Is a DIY cold plunge cheaper than buying one?

Often, if you already own a suitable tub or chiller. Once you add a pump, filter, hoses, valves, insulation and a protected circuit, the gap narrows.
