What Is a Chiller? A Plain-English Explanation

A chiller removes heat from water using a refrigeration loop. What the parts do, how a chiller differs from an air conditioner or heat pump, and what COP means.

A chiller is a machine that removes heat from water. It runs a refrigeration loop: refrigerant absorbs heat from the water, a compressor raises its pressure, and a condenser rejects that heat to the air or to another water loop. The chilled water then cools whatever it serves.

Any process that produces heat needs a way to get rid of it. A chiller is the standard answer when that heat lives in water. Instead of blowing cold air at a room, it cools a stream of water that can be piped exactly where it is needed.

The refrigeration cycle in four steps

Every chiller, from a 1 HP plunge unit to a 300-ton rooftop machine, runs the same loop.

  1. Evaporation. Low-pressure refrigerant enters the evaporator and boils, absorbing heat from the water passing the other side. The water gets colder.
  2. Compression. The compressor pulls the vapour out and squeezes it to a higher pressure and temperature.
  3. Condensation. In the condenser, the hot high-pressure gas gives up heat to the air or to a second water loop, and turns back into a liquid.
  4. Expansion. The liquid passes through an expansion device, its pressure drops, and the cycle starts again.

Nothing is "created cold". Heat is moved from the water to somewhere else, and the compressor pays for that move in electricity.

The parts of a chiller

Chiller components and what they do
PartJobWhy it matters to a buyer
CompressorRaises refrigerant pressureDetermines capacity band and noise
EvaporatorTransfers heat from water to refrigerantMaterials decide corrosion resistance
CondenserRejects heat to air or waterType defines installation requirements
Expansion valveMeters refrigerant flowElectronic valves improve part-load control
ControllerReads temperature and runs the cycleDetermines set point accuracy and protections
PumpMoves water through the loopFlow shortfall looks like a capacity problem
FilterRemoves debris from the waterKeeps the exchangers clean

Chiller, air conditioner, heat pump: what is the difference?

All three use the same refrigeration cycle. They differ in what they are optimised to move heat into or out of.

Chiller vs air conditioner vs heat pump

Air conditionerFrom indoor air to outdoor airCooled airSpace comfort
Heat pumpEither direction, air or waterHeated or cooled space or waterEfficient heating, dual-temperature tubs

A plunge chiller is a small chiller whose "chilled water" happens to be your tub.

What COP means, and why it is not a badge

Coefficient of performance is the ratio of heat removed to electrical energy consumed. A COP of 3 means three units of heat leave for every unit of electricity used, at the stated conditions.

Two cautions:

  • COP is measured at specific temperatures. A unit rated at a comfortable condition will not deliver the same COP when the room is hot.
  • Part-load behaviour matters more than the peak number. A chiller that modulates down well may use less energy across a day than one with a slightly better headline COP.

If a listing gives a COP without saying at what conditions, treat it as marketing rather than data.

Air-cooled or water-cooled?

The condenser decides. An air-cooled chiller rejects heat into the room through a fan and coil. A water-cooled chiller rejects heat into a second water loop, which needs a place to dump that heat.

For a home plunge tub, air-cooled is the norm. For a quiet treatment room or a building with a loop available, water-cooled is often the better fit. The choice changes noise, placement and maintenance more than it changes the physics.

Where chillers are used

  • Industrial process cooling: injection moulding, lasers, welding, machine tools.
  • HVAC: chilled water systems that feed air handlers in larger buildings.
  • Food and beverage: fermentation, dairy, and processing lines.
  • Medical and laboratory: MRI cooling, lasers, sample storage.
  • Aquaculture and aquariums: stable water temperature at volume.
  • Wellness: cold plunge tubs, contrast therapy suites, recovery rooms.

The scale varies enormously, but the questions a buyer must answer are the same: how much heat, at what temperature, rejected where, and maintained by whom.

Why cold plunge owners end up reading about chillers

A cold plunge tub is a body of water that gains heat from the room and from every person who gets in. To hold 10°C, you need to remove that heat continuously. A chiller does it with a set point and a filter, instead of bags of ice and a weekly drain.

Once you understand that a chiller is a heat mover with a rated capacity, the buying questions get much easier: how much heat, how fast, with what margin.

Frequently asked questions

How does a chiller cool water?

Refrigerant in the evaporator absorbs heat from the water and boils. The compressor raises the refrigerant pressure, the condenser rejects the heat outside the water loop, and the expanded refrigerant returns to pick up more heat.

What is the difference between a chiller and a heat pump?

A chiller is optimised to remove heat from water. A heat pump is optimised to move heat in either direction and can heat as well as cool. Reversible heat pumps are used in tubs that need both warm and cold water.

What does COP mean on a chiller?

Coefficient of performance: heat removed divided by electrical energy used, at stated conditions. Without the conditions, the number is not comparable between products.

Do chillers use a lot of electricity?

They use electricity continuously while maintaining a set point, and more while pulling a body of water down. The real answer depends on capacity, insulation, ambient temperature and how often the water is disturbed.

What is a chiller system?

The chiller plus everything around it: pump, pipework, buffer tank, controls and heat rejection. A good chiller with a badly designed system performs badly.
