Cold Plunge Filters: Types, Sizing and Care

How cold plunge filters work, which media and cartridge types are used, how to size a filter to the loop, and how often to clean or replace it.

A cold plunge filter removes hair, skin cells and fine debris before water reaches the chiller. Cartridge filters are the most common; sand and bead filters suit larger volumes. Size the filter to the loop flow, and clean or replace it on a schedule rather than by appearance.

The filter is the least glamorous part of a cold plunge and the one that decides whether the chiller still performs in six months. Debris that reaches a heat exchanger is expensive; debris that reaches a filter is routine.

What the filter is protecting

Two things, in order of cost:

  1. The chiller's heat exchanger. Fins and plates foul quickly with hair, skin and biofilm, and cleaning them properly is a technician job.
  2. The pump impeller. Hair wraps around it and slowly kills performance.

A filter that costs a fraction of either is doing its job if it is actually installed and actually changed.

For a home plunge tub under 600 litres, a pleated cartridge in a compact housing is the practical default.

Sizing the filter to the loop

The filter must pass the chiller's required flow when it is partly loaded, not just when it is new.

  • Check the flow rating of the housing and the cartridge.
  • Account for the pressure drop when the cartridge loads.
  • Do not use a fine cartridge on a loop with a marginal pump.
  • If flow collapses between cleanings, use a coarser cartridge or a larger housing.

A filter that restricts the loop is protecting the chiller at the cost of making it work harder.

Cleaning versus replacing

  • Rinse the cartridge whenever flow noticeably drops, or weekly in heavy use.
  • Deep clean with a hose from the inside out, never a pressure washer.
  • Replace when the pleats stay discoloured after cleaning, or when flow no longer recovers.
  • Never run the loop without a cartridge, even briefly; debris goes straight through.

Keep one spare cartridge. Waiting for delivery with a clogged filter is how people decide to "just run it without for a day".

Position in the loop

Standard order: tub → strainer → pump → filter → chiller → tub.

Filtering before the chiller protects the exchanger. Filtering before the pump protects both, which is why a coarse strainer sits at the very front.

Sanitation and the filter

A filter is not a sanitiser. It removes particles; it does not kill organisms. In fact, a loaded filter can become a place where biofilm grows if the loop is not treated.

  • Keep a sanitiser residual in the water.
  • Rinse the cartridge regularly; do not let it sit loaded for weeks.
  • Replace rather than persist with a cartridge that smells.
  • Clean the housing itself, not just the cartridge.

How the filter and chiller interact

The filter sits upstream of the chiller for a reason: what it misses, the chiller collects.

  • A partly loaded filter raises head and reduces flow.
  • Reduced flow lowers the chiller's effective capacity.
  • Lower capacity means longer run times and more heat gain.
  • More run time loads the filter faster.

That loop is why "the chiller is weak" is so often a filter story. Replace or clean the cartridge and the chiller recovers without any service work.

A simple maintenance calendar

Filter maintenance by interval
IntervalTaskWhy
Each sessionSkim the surfaceLess debris reaches the filter
WeeklyRinse the cartridgeRestores flow early
MonthlyReplace or deep cleanRemoves embedded debris
QuarterlyClean the housing and O-ringPrevents leaks and biofilm
SeasonallyInspect hoses and fittingsCatches wear before failure

Adjust for use. A daily user in summer may need weekly replacement; a covered tub used twice a week may go six weeks.

When to upgrade the filter

Upgrade rather than clean more often if:

  • Flow collapses within days of a fresh cartridge.
  • The tub needs draining to keep water clear.
  • The cartridge finishes the month visibly loaded.
  • You have added users or sessions.

A larger housing with a bigger cartridge is usually the fix, provided the pump can still deliver the chiller's flow window.

Signs your filter needs attention

  • Return flow weaker than usual.
  • Water cloudy within hours of filtering.
  • Chiller running longer than it used to.
  • Visible debris on the cartridge after a week of light use.
  • Rising sanitiser demand.

Any of those points to the filter before it points to the chiller.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a filter in a cold plunge?

Yes, if you want the chiller to keep performing and the water to stay usable. Without filtration, debris fouls the heat exchanger and the water needs changing far more often.

How often should I replace a cold plunge filter cartridge?

Often monthly for home use, and more often with heavy use or frequent sessions. Replace earlier if flow does not recover after cleaning.

Can I use a pool filter cartridge in a cold plunge?

Sometimes, if the housing and cartridge sizes match and the flow rating suits your loop. Pool cartridges are usually larger, so check the fit and the pressure drop.

Is a sand filter better than a cartridge?

For larger volumes, a sand filter is convenient and handles fines well. For a home plunge tub, a cartridge is simpler, cheaper and easier to inspect.

What happens if the filter clogs completely?

Flow drops, the chiller loses capacity or trips on protection, and the pump runs hot. It is one of the most common causes of a plunge tub that "stopped working".
